Thoughts on Atlanta Webmasters’ Lunch & Learn

Webmasters at Work

Last week I hosted Ignition Alley’s first Lunch and Learn for Atlanta web-masters. While there are some skeptics of websites winning with advertising, the truth is many people are doing it and they’re making a decent living running commerce sites and serving ads against topics you care enough to search for.

With Atlanta Web Entrepreneurs no longer holding meetings, the Webmasters’ Lunch and Learn is what I hope would be the first in a series of workshops dedicated to tackling specific problems that many in the area are facing with their various ventures. After all, Ignition Alley has a VERY nice conference room and for the most part it sits unused.

After speaking with a number of local web-masters many of whom have different focuses but ultimately the same goal, I decided that optimizing for revenue would be a great start to get some of the more successful web masters together. The most valuable thing I got out of the day was the ability to compare notes and gauge if I’m operating efficiently. Luckily I was in the ballpark.

I must confess, I hosted the event in hopes of finding an alternative that would make AdSense less relevant for me – unfortunately that was not my takeaway. However, our discussions did ping a number of relevant subjects including: ad testing, traffic building, various optimization tools and a long list of worthless networks that web masters in general should just ignore.

With 20 weekdays in a month, I’m hoping more Lunch and Learn sessions will pop up at the Alley. It would be nice to see advanced discussions on various topics such as e-commerce, shopping funnel, analytics, web design, SEO, SEM, social media, site speed optimization, etc.

What are some of the issues you would like to compared notes on or see tackled?
